More than five hundred years of the Moorsā influence and architecture has made Vejer de la Frontera, with its backcloth hill of six hundred feet, one of the most beautiful towns in the province of Cadiz. It's located at only some 15 minutes from the marvelous beaches of los CaƱos de Meca and El Palmar on the Costa de la Luz.
Exploring Vejer de la Frontera
A tour around the town following the advice of the local tourist office would start in the Pasio de Corredera, passing by the Puerta de Sancho IV, Casa del Mayorzgo and the Torre del Homenaje, the Arco de la Villa, plaza āde los pescaitosā (plaza de EspaƱa), Castillo and the Barrio de la Juderia (the Jewish quarter) and finishing at the parish church of Divino Salvador and the Puerta de la Segur.
However, one should not miss out the windmills next to the Jewish Quarter, Santuary de la Oliva, Walled Precinct (city symbol), four City Gates, El Palmar beach and Nmac ā a special piece of contemporary art in the countryside of Dehesa de Montenmedio.
Anytime is a good time to wander in the narrow streets and to sample the excellent tapas, especially in places like Janda en la Bodeguita (Marques de Tamaron 9) or in the Barca de Vejer (Sacrista, Bodegas Gallardo.
Important festivals at Vejer de la Frontera include:
- Carnivales (February),
- Easter Week, Spring Festivals (April-May with processions of coaches and veiled women)
- Romeria de Nuestra SeƱora de la Oliva (7 May).
Surroundings of Vejer
Vejer, like an alert lookout over the beach of El Palmar, rises through a labyrinth of narrow and steep streets, with white shuttered houses which conceal the surprises of their beautiful and hidden patios.
Vejer has managed to integrate successfully several countryside uses, including some of high ecological value, like Santa Lucia, an experimental farm, declared a national monument, due to its special watering system which dates from Roman times.
Also outstanding are the Park of Acantilado y Pinar de Barbete; the country house of Las Lomas, and the surroundings of Lake Janda which has exceptional ornithogical value.
El Palmar beach which stretches for four miles has been preserved in its natural state. It has exceptionally fine white sand and crystal clear waters, which are excellent for fishing, surfing and windsurfing. The areas around El Palmar with its beach bars (chiringuitos), fashion terraces and restaurant are very popular too.
As well as water sports, Vejer has the advantage of a hill which serves as a take-off site for hang-gliders and delta wing flyers. There are good facilities in the countrypark for walkers and hikers as well as for horse riders. Golf can be played at the Dehesa de Montemedio course (18 holes par 72, 5,896m).
